Surrogacy unpaid in Canada, how do you get paid for become a surrogate mother?

  1. The AHRA permits surrogacy but that a surrogate may only be reimbursed for her reasonable out of pocket expenses related to the surrogacy process.
  2. Fertility attorneys will include surrogacy costs in the Gestational Carrier Agreement (GCA) through expense reimbursement, and The AHR Act is what allows surrogate mothers to be reimbursed for a variety of expenses, such as: travel expenditures, the care of dependants or pets, counselling services, expenditures for the services of a midwife or doula, ect.
  3. In the United States, surrogacy fees are usually escrowed in a trust account and wired internationally to the surrogate mother.

How many times does a Canadian surrogate mother usually need to visit her attending physician to complete an embryo transfer at a U.S. clinic?

Requirements vary from clinic to clinic, usually 1-2 times. 

  • Medical screening, 1-2 days, visit clinic on day 12/13 of period to complete all lab and ultrasound tests. If your attending physician allows you to use a local monitoring clinic and complete all testing there, you can skip this trip.
  • Embryo Transfer,3-4days, you will need to arrive at a hotel near the clinic the night before the embryo transfer date. Once the transfer is complete, you will need to return home after 24-48 hours of bed rest at the hotel.

Where will I deliver, Canada or the US?

When we choose a match for you, we usually select prospective parents who are comfortable with their baby being born in Canada.

After you have passed the interview, you will sign a “Surrogate Fee Schedule” with the agency, which specifies the total compensation and reimbursement of expenses for the surrogate mother.

What expenses are reimbursed by a surrogate mothers?

  • Travel expenditures, including expenditures for transportation, parking, meals and accommodation;
  • Expenditures for the care of dependants or pets;
  • Expenditures for counselling services;
  • Expenditures for legal services and disbursements;
  • Expenditures for obtaining any drug or device as defined in section 2 of the Food and Drugs Act;
  • Expenditures for obtaining products or services that are provided or recommended in writing by a person authorized under the laws of a province to assess, monitor and provide health care to a woman during her pregnancy, delivery or the post-partum period;
  • Expenditures for obtaining a written recommendation referred to in paragraph (f);
  • Expenditures for the services of a midwife or doula;
  • Expenditures for groceries, excluding non-food items;
  • Expenditures for maternity clothes;
  • Expenditures for telecommunications;
  • Expenditures for prenatal exercise classes;
  • Expenditures related to the delivery;
  • Expenditures for health, disability, travel, or life insurance coverage; and
  • Expenditures for obtaining or confirming medical or other records.

The very first step in the surrogate pregnancy process is actually applying to be a surrogate mother. The application process starts with a qualification questionnaire to ensure that you meet all the requirements to become a surrogate. Some of these questions include topics like your citizenship status, lifestyle, past pregnancy experience, medical issues, and employment history. Once you meet all requirements we ask you about your background, health, and motivations for becoming a surrogate.


Interview

After completing your online application, you will have a one-to-one call with our Admissions Manager. This is to help us get a better, more personal understanding of who you are and why you want to go through the surrogate mother process. We will go through your application and discuss your journey in more detail. You will also have an opportunity to ask us any questions, so you can have a clear idea of what is expected of you.


Screening

The screening process entails a background check and a review of your medical records. Getting all this information might take a while, so you may want to consider contacting your doctor and OB/GYN beforehand to request medical records.

After you make it through the application, interview, and screening process, we get started on finding your perfect match. We will share your profile with intended parents who we believe will be a good match for you, based on shared values and geographical location. If you’re a good fit for each other we will facilitate an introduction, allowing you and the prospective parents an opportunity to get to know each other.
